THE PROJECT:

Today, inland waterway transport remains the domain of large companies transporting bulk goods.
It is not suited to transporting small volumes or pallets.
Loaded onto barges or grouped into containers, these pallet flows would need to be consolidated to use river transport effectively.

ST4W is a European Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) project aimed at promoting modal shift from road to river via hierarchical multimodal tracking.

Combined with suitable transshipment methods, ST4W offers logistics management software for river transport that enables different stakeholders in a multimodal logistics chain to share shipment tracking data at all stages of transport, including pre- and post-carriage, providing visibility throughout the supply chain.

Beyond creating a new market by opening up inland waterway transport to SMEs, the platform’s advantages are numerous:

  • Updating the successive status of goods along the multimodal route
  • Sending alerts in case of discrepancies between planning and execution
  • Collecting and making available proof of delivery for each logistics unit
  • Improved estimation of the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) for each transport segment
